You will see the “Terms and Conditions” when you are loading a new debit or credit card in Apple Pay. You can also click here.

Is Apple Pay secure?

Every time you hand over your credit or debit card to pay, your card number and identity are visible. With Apple Pay, instead of using your actual credit and debit card numbers when you add your card, the Apple Pay Device Account Number is assigned, encrypted, and securely stored in a chip within your device. These numbers are never stored on Apple servers.

Adding/Removing a Card

How is a card set up in Apple Pay?

There are two ways to add your SF Fire CU card to Apple Pay:

1. If your SF Fire CU Card is ALREADY REGISTERED in iTunes:

  • From Settings: Open Settings > Tap Passbook & Apple Pay
  • From Passbook: Open Passbook > Tap Credit and Debit Cards
  1. Tap “Use Card on File with iTunes”
  2. Enter your Security Code (CVV – which is located on the back of the card)
  3. Review and Agree to the Terms and Conditions
  4. Card information will be sent to Visa for Verification
  5. Once your card is activated by Visa and the Credit Union, it will show as an active card in Passbook

2. If you are adding your SF Fire CU Card as a NEW CARD:

  1. Open Settings and Tap Passbook & Apple Pay
  2. Tap “Add Credit or Debit Card”
  3. Tap the camera icon to take a picture of your EMBOSSED* card
  4. Review and Agree to the Terms and Conditions
  5. Once your card is activated by Visa and the Credit Union, it will show as an active card in Passbook

*Note: If your SF Fire CU card is a flat card (the card number and your name are not raised from the card), the camera
feature will NOT work. Simply type in your card information on the card details screen.

What is an Apple Pay Device Account Number?

When you enroll in Apple Pay, your existing 16-digit card number will be converted to new digital Apple Pay Device Account Number that is associated to your card. This Apple Pay Device Account Number is used when you use Apple Pay for purchases. This digital account number is what is passed to the merchant and then to VISA to process the transaction. Keep in mind that Apple Pay works on a per device basis so the card will need to be added to each of your eligible devices and each one will have its own unique Apple Pay Device Account Number.

Why did I receive an Activation Confirmation or Activation Failure email?

You’ll receive either an Activation Confirmation or Activation Failure email to ensure you were the one that requested that your SF Fire Credit Union card be available for use in Apple Pay, and to provide additional information either about Apple Pay or troubleshooting and attempting to add your card again. This is an extra step in making sure only you or authorized users are setting up cards on your devices to use with Apple Pay.

How do I set my SF Fire CU card as the default card?

The first card that you add to Passbook automatically is set as the “Default” card. This can easily be changed through your Settings:

  1. Launch Settings, Tap Passbook & Apple Pay
  2. Tap on Default Card, Choose your new default

How do I remove a card from Apple Pay?

Keep in mind that Apple Pay works on a per device basis so the card will need to be removed from each device it is linked to individually.

On your device, in Settings, Tap and launch Passbook & Apple Pay

  1. Tap the credit/debit card
  2. Tap Remove Card
  3. Tap Remove again

You can also delete your card using iCloud.com. This method allows you to delete all your cards on your specific device. Even though Apple Pay can’t be used by anyone that doesn’t have a fingerprint registered on your device, we’d still recommend removing all payment options if your iPhone goes missing. To do this, go to www.icloud.com > Sign into iCloud > Click on the Settings icon > Go to the My Devices section (bottom of page) > Click on the Device that you want to wipe Apple Pay from (the Apple Pay logo will be next to the device) > Click Remove All

What happens when my card expires?

When your card expires, you are responsible for removing your expired card from Apple Pay, and setting up your card with the new expiration date.

What should I do if my Debit or Credit Card is lost or stolen?

You will need to contact SF Fire Credit Union to have the card blocked, or mark the card as Lost or Stolen within Online Banking. A replacement card will be sent to you, and when it is received you will need to enroll the card as a new card within Apple Pay.

What should I do if my device is lost or stolen?

If you lose your iPhone or iPad, you’ll want to remove any credit or debit cards that were enrolled on your device by logging into your iCloud account at iCloud.com.

You can also use Find My iPhone to quickly put the device in Lost mode to suspend Apple Pay.

Performing a Transaction

How to perform an Apple Pay transaction at a store?

To use Apple Pay using your default card, hold your device within an inch of the merchant’s contactless reader with your finger held on Touch ID without pressing it. With a few seconds, you will feel a subtle vibration and see a checkmark on the screen. That’s how you know that your payment information was sent.

How do I pay with a card other than my default card?

  1. Position your device close to the contactless reader without placing your finger on Touch ID.
  2. After your iPhone “wakes up,” your default card will appear on your screen.
  3. Tap your default card to display a list of available cards, then tap the card you want to use.
  4. Complete the transaction as noted above

How do I perform an Apple Pay transaction within an app on the device?

When the “Buy with Apple Pay” or “Apple Pay” icon is seen as a payment method on your device, Apple Pay can be used to complete the transaction.

  1. Review your payment information and contact details. Enter other billing, shipping, and contact information if necessary.
  2. Apple Pay will store that information, so you won’t need to enter it again.
  3. Place your finger on Touch ID to complete the payment.

What type of card information is transmitted during an Apple Pay transaction?

When you make a purchase, the Apple Pay Device Account Number is used to process your payment. So your actual credit or debit card numbers are never shared by Apple with merchants or transmitted with payment. Apple does not save your transaction data information and it cannot be tied back to you.

How will returns/exchanges work for Apple Pay transactions?

If the cashier needs your card details to process the return, you’ll follow the same steps you did when making a payment. Hold your iPhone 6 or 6 Plus near the payment terminal, select the card that was used to make the original payment, and authorize the return with Touch ID or Passcode. Depending on the return and refund policies of the store, it may take up to several days for the return transaction to appear on your credit or debit card statement.

Is there any impact to earning Extra AwardsTM Points for Apple Pay transactions?

No. If you have an SF Fire Credit Union Platinum Visa credit card, you will continue to earn Extra Awards Reward Points for Apple Pay transactions, just as you would on all other transactions performed.

How will I know if a transaction was performed with Apple Pay?

Your Apple Pay transactions can be viewed on your device in Passbook. The transactions will look like other card transactions when posting to your account in online banking or on your monthly account statement and will not have a designation that it was an Apple Pay transaction.

What will purchase receipts show when using Apple Pay?

When Apple Pay is used for a purchase the last 4 digits of the Apple Pay Device Account Number will show on the receipt. The actual card number will not be shown on the receipt since it is not transmitted as part of the process.

(Note: In Passbook you can “flip” your card over to see the Device Account Number as well as the last four digits of the “real” card number by tapping on the information button at the bottom of the screen.)

Are Apple Pay purchases protected against fraud?

Yes. Whether you use Apple Pay or the card itself, Visa’s Zero Liability Policy protects you against fraudulent transactions. If Apple Pay was used on a contactless terminal, the fraud protection is the same as if you used your physical card. If an online Apple Pay transaction was used, the fraud protection is the same as if a card was not present for the transaction.
