Message from the President: Happy New Year

On behalf of everyone at the credit union, I hope all of our members had a wonderful holiday season. Once again, I was amazed by your generosity with our efforts to support the SF Firefighters Toy Program. Thank you for your donations, which totaled over $17,000 this season and benefit an organization which touches the lives of so many children. Congratulations are also in order for our firefighter members, as well as those who aspire to become firefighters. We’d like to recognize those who were honored at the San Francisco Fire Department’s Meritorious Ceremony on December 8th, as well as the 118th Firefighter Recruit Academy, who were sworn in as firefighters and firefighter-paramedics on December 18th. To the thirty-one graduates of the City College of San Francisco Fire Academy’s Class 16 (Fall 2015), we wish you luck in your pursuit of a career in the fire service.

The past year has been a good one for SF Fire Credit Union. While we’re still in the process of finalizing our financials for 2015, I’d like you to know that we’re doing well with steady growth and continued profitability. Our capital reserves now exceed $90 million, and should assure members that we’ll be serving you well into the future. We strive to provide an exceptional level of service, and to meet member expectations in a financial services market place which is continuously evolving. Enhancements were made to our card programs to improve convenience and security. We launched Apple Pay, which allows members to make payments using their Apple supported devices. We incorporated mirco-chip technology into our credit cards, for greater security and global usability. The Stonestown Branch was remodeled, to improve the ‘flow’ of the branch and service experience at that location. And just before the holidays, we introduced an easier-to-use online home loan application.

We’ve got a lot planned for 2016. This winter will bring the launch of our much-anticipated and long-awaited new Online Banking System, which will offer enhanced security that includes unique user IDs for joint owners and two-factor authentication. Chip-enabled technology will be added to our debit cards this coming spring. Those who have an Android smartphone will be able to make payments with them, as Samsung Pay and Android Pay are coming later this year. And of course, we’ll continue holding events that have proven to be popular with members. Information regarding document shred days and educational seminars will be soon to come.

In closing, I’d like to thank you for your continued loyalty and support. I hope to see you in the coming year, be it at the annual meeting, a branch, or a member event. But in the meantime, know that I always welcome your questions and comments. Please feel free to contact me directly via our website (“Ask Darren”), Twitter (@SFFireCU) or mail at our California Street address.

Another Great Year Working with the SF Firefighters Toy Program

As our long-time members are aware, we work with the SF Firefighters Toy Program each year to raise funds to help purchase toys for the children in need in our community. We are not able to do this without the generosity of our members, and the active and retired members of the San Francisco Fire Department.

We were lucky to again have Santa (retired SFFD firefighter Bob Cuff) at all four of our branches, ready to greet children (young and old!), and take photos. Our friends from Engines 1, 10, and 19 also came out to the branches to join in on the fun, and add some local SF Firefighter flare to our members’ photos, and their own!

The SF Firefighters Toy Program works year-round to prepare for the busy holiday season, and gives toys to over 40,000 kids in our community. To get involved, or to learn more about how you or your company can get involved, visit www.sffirefighterstoys.org or follow them on Facebook for updates.

Message from the President: Autumn Update

Autumn has arrived, bringing with it an opportunity to reflect on the summer of 2015, and share what’s on the credit union’s horizon for the coming months. It was certainly a busy summer for our members, with a flurry of borrowing correlated with what I hope was an active and memorable season for all. We appreciated being your travel credit card of choice, and were happy to provide financing to purchase your cars (including at our August Car Sale at the Cow Palace), recreational vehicles, and motorcycles. We exist to meet your financial services needs, and are grateful you give us the opportunity to do just that. A loyal and engaged membership has always been the key to SF Fire Credit Union’s success, and I’m pleased to report that our financial performance remains strong with continued profitability and ability to add to capital reserves.

It was also a busy summer here at the credit union. We completed our launch of EMV chip-enabled credit cards, which provide members with a high level of security as well as greater global usability.
All credit cards have been reissued, and we expect to begin reissuing EMV chip-enabled debit cards
in early 2016. We also remodeled our Stonestown branch, in a manner we believe improves the service experience at that location.
