Passing of James Olson - Long Serving Board Member & Credit Union Advocate

It’s with a heavy heart that SF Fire Credit Union notifies to our membership that James (Jim) Olson passed away on August 4th.

Long and Storied Career of Protecting San Franciscans
Jim enjoyed a long and successful career in the San Francisco Fire Department, which began as a cadet in 1963 and concluded as Deputy Chief of Department in 1996. Always a mentor to up-and-coming firefighters, he will be remembered by many for advising them to “Never forget you started on the back step of the truck.”

Decades of Credit Union Stewardship
Having always had an interest in finances, Jim understood the positive impact our Credit Union had on the lives of its members. Serving as an elected official for over twenty years, he will be remembered for being a steward of the Credit Union who was always an advocate of the member.

Ways to Travel Smarter with Your SF Fire Credit Union Platinum Visa®

Whether you’re already carrying a SF Fire Credit Union Platinum Visa, or you’ve yet to apply, we want to make sure you’re aware of all of the great benefits of being a cardholder – benefits that can come in handy especially when traveling.

For frequent world travelers, you might be familiar with a 1-3% fee that is commonly charged when you make a transaction using cards from other financial institutions. When you use your SF Fire Credit Union Platinum Visa, you will not receive a foreign transaction fee charge or exchange fees, which can make keeping track of what you’re spending a little easier.

Speaking of keeping track of your spending while abroad, sometimes
miscalculations can happen (or emergencies). In the event that you go over your credit limit, it could be comforting to know that we do not charge overlimit fees.

Much like giving our members some wiggle room by not charging an overlimit fee, you have the option to link your card to your checking account to use your Visa as a source of backup funds. Set this up within Online or Mobile Banking, or by contacting us.

Visa offers a robust set of services for our members, they include:

  • Auto Collision Waiver: As long as you pay for your rental car with your Visa, your rental will have coverage at no additional charge that will reimburse for damage due to collision or theft.
  • Travel Emergency Assistance Services: Available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, this service includes help with lost luggage location, ticket replacement, legal and medical referrals, and more.

Lastly, all of that spending will help you earn Extra Awards points – where, for every dollar you spend, a point is earned that can be redeemed for cash, gift cards or future flights.

CEO Darren Herrmann Departing

It’s with appreciation and respect that we share the news of Darren Herrmann’s departure on June 17th. We wish him well, and are committed to maintaining the high level of service he championed since arriving at SF Fire Credit Union as a member of our senior management team in 2002.

Service & Innovation

Always seeking ways to improve the member service experience, many initiatives were launched under his guidance after he assumed the position of CEO in 2010. Be they technological (mobile banking, remote check deposit, EMV chip-enabled credit cards, Apple Pay™), pertaining to branches (extended hours, free CoinStar™ machines, online appointments), or member events (car sales, document shred days, educational seminars), he implemented programs designed to make doing business with us easier and more convenient than ever before.

Challenging Economic Times

Under Darren’s stewardship, SF Fire Credit Union fared well through challenging economic times. While growth was steady ($676 million to $1.2 billion in assets), it was consistently outpaced by earnings. The Credit Union’s capital reserves increased from $49.2 million to nearly $90 million during this time, which bodes well for a long and prosperous future of serving members.

Interim CEO Marla Shepard

The Board of Directors is dedicated to carrying on with our tradition of providing exceptional service and value to members. They have appointed Marla K. Shepard as the Credit Union’s interim CEO. She brings with her over forty years of senior executive level experience at top performing credit unions, and has extensive knowledge of operations, service quality, business strategy, and executive management.
